Discover the grounds and woodland at our Derbyshire country house hotel

Gardens & grounds

Step outside and take it all in

Nestled in a 35-acre patchwork of gardens, grounds, woodland, and streams, our house is at the heart of its very own ecosystem. Home to wildlife, including deer, badgers, and rabbits, as well as bees, bugs, birds, and bats, our grounds are a vital part of the natural balance.

Wander through the woods and wild meadow

In collaboration with Blue Forest, we have carefully built our Wildhives within the ancient woodland. If you're not staying in a Wildhive, we encourage you to take a walk through the grounds and see how the woodland changes from autumnal shades of golden amber to a sea of lilac in springtime when bluebells carpet our woods. Follow the nature trail and become immersed in a hive of activity of birds and insects and spot rare flora and fauna in the wild meadow. We will shortly be installing our Wildhive Cam but in the meantime, venture out at night and you may just spot an owl, bat or badger.

Gather in the gardens

Sit and while away the hours in hidden corners of the meadow or play croquet on the lawn, making sure to avoid the odd bump from late-night badger activity! Scrump soft fruits in the kitchen garden, lose yourself in that book you’ve been meaning to read, relax in a deckchair in the sunny secret garden or nod off on a sunlounger – the choice is yours. And to top it off, our dedicated team are on hand to bring you a refreshing drink.

Explore further afield

As well as our gardens and ancient woodland, the estate also includes meadows, a newly planted orchard of apple trees home to our beehives, and endless fields where you can sit and enjoy a picnic next to Bentley Brook. You'll never be short of a secluded spot here, and our team can tell you all the best places to go.
